We offer Canyoning in Madeira, Portugal to all Aida cruise guests. Experience this great sport as an unforgettable day trip from the port of Funchal. No matter whether you are traveling with the Aida Cara, Nova or Mar. Visit one of the many gorges on the volcanic island with us.
Madeira has around one hundred tours for this great sport, around twenty are ideal for guided groups. Depending on your skills and knowledge, I will choose a suitable canyon. Very close to the port of Funchal there are several possibilities to experience the fascinating nature up close.
The entire excursion is organized by me, including the necessary material as well as the transfer from the cruise ship to the chosen gorge. A comprehensive and professional briefing is also a matter of course for me.
Experience non-mandatory jumping, sliding, thrilling abseiling and swimming in deep gorges. Look forward to an incomparable mixture of adrenaline and closeness to nature.
I, Michael, as your German, English and French speaking CIC canyoning guide have more than twenty years of professional experience and have already visited countless gorges around the world and even openend them up in some cases. The elimination of the language barrier is an invaluable advantage, which is particularly evident in the safety instructions and explanations.

I offer you all of this, even without being an official contractual partner of Aida Cruises.

What do you experience while canyoning?

Canyoning is the descent of a more or less deep and narrow cut, water-bearing gorge in the downstream direction. We overcome various obstacles such as steps and waterfalls, which the water has carved out of the rock over millions of years of grinding work, using various techniques: jumping, sliding, climbing or abseiling. Crystal clear pools invite you to swim and high rock walls are our companions.
You will learn all the necessary techniques in the course of the descent; on my tours you are part of a team and not just pure consumers. You will experience canyoning as an all-encompassing experience and great learning success.
Together we feel the special mix of nature and action, crackling water and breathtaking green on dark rock. We're visiting a spot in Madeira that you definitely wouldn't see otherwise. Promised!

Canyoning abseiling

Abseiling

After the ropes have been properly attached to specially installed anchoring points, you tie yourself into the rope after appropriate instruction. You sit down slowly in the harness, open the lanyard and let the rope run through the descender in a finely regulated manner. This is how easy your abseil journey begins along the roaring waterfall.

Canyoning jumping

Jumps

Some of the natural pools are deep enough that we can jump down low steps. There are also often fun slides. The jumps and slides, which can be up to five meters high depending on the courage and circumstances, are of course never mandatory. I always hang up a suitable rope. The turquoise water is waiting for you.

Swimming in a canyon in Seixal

Swimming

Almost always crystal clear water flows down the gorge and collects in large pools and long corridors. Well protected from the cold, we swim together thanks to the special colors that are created by minerals that the water washes out of the rock. This sport is extremely addictive, and many of my clients keep returning to canyons.

Known canyons

We offer the following canyons near the port of Funchal exclusively for Aida guests. Book your tour with just a mouse click. In the event of unsuitable weather conditions, we reserve the right to choose a different canyon for safety reasons.
We are happy to descend other canyons with you on request.

Discovery Tour
Level0

Discovery Tour

Our taster tour is suitable for all cruisship guests, who want to get to know the sport and its various facets without having to walk or strain their brains for long. Your guide will take on as many of the necessary tasks as possible. Extremely short distances.
Cidrao, Curral das Freiras
Level1

Cidrao

The Ribeira do Cidrao is deeply hidden in the nuns valley north-west of Funchal. Numerous cascading waterfalls and an amazing last pool delight canyonists. The best tour for guests who have little or no experience of this fascinating sport. 7 abseils up to 15 meters.
Canyoning Cales
Level2

Cales, Funchal

A 20-minute drive takes us to a very compact canyoning tour above Funchal. There is almost no walking in the gorge, waterfall follows waterfall. Abseiling points up to 25 meters. 1 minute ascent and only 20 minutes return! Very unusual rock for Madeira.
Canyoning Frio
Level3

Frio

The Ribeira Frio is divided into two sections that lie directly next to each other. First we walk down various smaller waterfalls, and if you like you can finish by abseiling 45 meters. The Frio only carries water in the winter months, which is why we switch to another canyon outside of this period.
Mijas Velhas Gorge
Level3

Mijas Velhas

One of the few canyoning tours in the south of Madeira. It is ideal for guests with a good head for heights and some previous rope experience, for example from climbing. Or from a previous tour. Eleven abseiling points, five of which are more than 10 meters high.
Joao Gomes, Funchal
Level4

Cales 4 + Cable Car

A great combination of a cable car ride to Monte and an exciting canyoning tour between high rock faces. Spectacular views of the gorge from above and 11 abseiling points up to 30 meters high in the canyon. Offered exclusively by Casa Vento Madeira in the winter months.
Ribeira Campanario
Level5

Ribeira Campanario

For brave fans of high waterfalls. Extremely spectacular descent to the hip bay of Calhau da Lapa. After two short entry abseils, you can look forward to an extremely exposed belay station and a free-hanging 85 meter high waterfall full of rainbows. Welcome to the sea!
Furnas in Ribeira Brava
Level5

Ribeira das Furnas

The professional tour, which I only do with Aida customers who have already been on another tour. There are eleven spectacular abseils between 5 and 85 meters, one of them with an intermediate anchorpoint. Here you have to tie into the rope completely on your own.
