The Joao Gomes River canyon in Madeira is renowned for its
dramatic rock formations, deep pools and cascading waterfalls - making it a prime destination
for canyoning enthusiasts. We will navigate through narrow gorges, slide down
smooth rock faces, and leap into refreshing pools surrounded by dense vegetation. The combination
of physical challenge and visual splendor ensures that every moment feels like stepping into a
postcard-perfect scene.
The gorge contains a dozen abseils from 5 to 30 meters, it is a perfect destination in winter,
as in the dry summer no water is running. Along the descent, you will be able to marvel
mountains of tree trunks that were pushed together by the last major flood in 2010.
The rappels in that Level 4 tour are always very close to the water jet, but never become
dagerous, except if the flow is very high. Depending on the conditions and your braveness,
you will be able to perform some thrilling jumps - but Casa Vento will never force you to
do so.

Casa Vento picks you up
at the harbour in Funchal.
We drive to the Botanical garden.
We take the cable car to
Monte for a scenic ride above the Joao Gomes gorge. Beautiful views of the
nature and the harbour with the cruiseship accompany our ride.
Afterwards, just a few minutes of
downhill walk bring us to the entry bridge of our canyoning tour.
After dressing up and some professional
instructions, the first slide into the adventure leads into an emerald pool.
A short path over rough rock faces,
some short bath in fresh water, until we reach the next waterfall.
The first abseil is waiting.
Now we are in the middle of the action,
abseil follows abseil, waterfall follows waterfall.
After some more walking and a short lunch brake,
the highlight of the day is right in front of us.
Two huge waterfalls of 25 and 30 meters.
