If the conditions are right, then the Seixal superior canyoning
tour is one of the best descents in Madeira. The gorge is located in the municipality
of Porto Moniz and begins on the Paul da Serra plateau. A total of almost 30
abseiling points lead through a gorge that is deep in places and impresses with its wealth of
different types of rock. The canyon normally ends at the Levada do Seixal, but it is a good idea to
join one of the four inferior canyons that start there. Otherwise, a steep descent via the
Lombo das Barbinhas path awaits you.
To tackle this level 5 gorge, you will need two cars and a passion for driving, as the shuttle route is long and, above all, winding - like so many roads in Madeira. The parking lot even has an information board about the canyoning tours. From there, follow the Terra Cha road on foot and you will arrive at a small stream in just a few minutes.
Don't be surprised if the stream bed is dry at the start, as numerous tributaries feed the canyon
during the descent, which is particularly noticeable in the lower section.
What begins so inconspicuously here, develops over the course of the several-hour descent into a
fascinating canyon with some fantastically beautiful passages. Sometimes it is not easy to find the
abseiling points, but if you have already done a few canyoning tours in Madeira, then you will be
familiar with the Madeiran style of drilling.
The highest waterfall measures 40 meters, currently there is one abseiling point out of almost thirty
that has this height, all others are a maximum of 30 meters. It is planned to set up an intermediate
belay here as well, so that this canyoning tour can be done with 30 meter ropes in the future. Stay

After an eventful five to six hours, which can be quite strenuous due to some of the walking, you
reach the Levada do Seixal. From here you have many options:
1) You can walk steeply uphill via the Lombo das Barbinhas path back to the upper parking lot, which
is a great option if you only have one car available.
2) You can follow this path downhill to get to the exit parking lot.
3) Choose one of the four canyoning tours that start at the Levada do Seixal:
Seixal inferior
Hortela inferior
Folhado inferior
Vimieiro
You should only consider this option if you have plenty of time!
