CANYONING VIDEO: FURNA IN SANTANA, MADEIRA

Canyoning Level 3

Furna, Santana

Madeira

Another canyoning video from Casa Vento Madeira: Furna in Santana, a beautiful Level 3 gorge for advanced canyoneers.

What to expect in this canyon in the north-east of Madeira:

An amazing first waterfall of 45 meters, rapelling in the full stream river right or a bit dryer river left.
A very green gorge full of huge flowers, unforgettable when they bloom.
Almost ever an elevated flow
A last abseil into a cathedral-like, huge circle of rockwalls
If you have two cars, a very short access and return

Informations about this canyoning tour:

The Furna canyon is located very near the Continente supermarket in Santana, but is virtually impossible to find without precise GPS data. The first section of the path in particular, which leads through plantations, doesn't seem to lead anywhere. But once you have found the start of the short descent at the end of the meadow, you can no longer get lost. Follow this path until it reaches the stream bed for the second time. It is less than 10 minutes' walk from the car. You are already very close to the huge and powerful waterfall, measuring 45 meters. It is the highest and most intense drop of the tour.

The two rappel lines river left and river right each have two anchors for a short handrail and two bolts to abseil from (river left) or a glue in chain with rope protector (river right). Take care, the abseil river right is leading through the full water jet during the second half of your descent, which can be dangerous, when the flow is higher. That is normally the case after periods with rain or in winter.

The canyoning becomes much easier now, there are several small descents to master, an old small Levada river right even provides an emergency exit in the middle of the canyon.

Unfortunately, the rock in the deep gorge is mostly slippery, what makes walking tricky from time to time. And the water quickly becomes cloudy, making the passage difficult, if you are not leading your group.

The end of Furna canyon in Santana is an amazingly spectacular 20 meters waterfall, that thunders down into a huge rock cauldron, accompanied by numerous small springs, coming out of the cathedral walls. The famous 25 fontes spot in Madeira falls far short of this natural wonder.

Just a few minutes to walk in the slippery riverbed and you will reach a bridge. Right before it, you will find a small path, leading uphill, passing under the bridge and ending up next to the road and a rescue telephone pole. From hear you head to the left, downhill, to find the old road and your car.
