Canyoning in Campanario is a short but very intense adventure.
One small rappel to enter the gorge, another 15 meters waterfall and immediately
you are standing in front of an adrenalitic experience: a 90 meters high, vertical
drop that will lead you in one or two pitches to the famousCalhau da Lapa in
Madeira.
I am 100 percent sure that you will remind the anchorpoint of the big waterfall of this canyoning
tour for a very long time, as it is extremely exposed. The video alone will
give you goosebumps.
But let us start from the beginning:
You leave the Expressway at exit 2,
Campanario and drive down in the direction of the ocean. You pass a school and shortly after,
you will reach the bridge over the river. Park nearby and check the waterlevel.
Afterwards just follow the small path that leads to Calhau da Lapa for a good five minutes
until you reach a bench.
This is the spot to dress up, if you wish,
you can check the waterlevel again.
Your first rappel starts from the reiling
and leads you just in front of the first waterfall, measuring 15 meters as well.
After this warm up, you can bypass the
undergrowth on the left bank.
And here we go:
A first, more or less horizontal rappel
leads you to the most thrilling abseil chain in Madeira. Don't mind using the single middle
bolt for an easier approach. You will be glad to find a small step below the anchorpoit.
Install the ropes, my advice is to abseil
in a single pitch of 90 meters, even if there is an intermidiate anchor. For two reasons:
The middle anchor is hard to find.
It is much more fun.
And now enjoy the canyoning abseil along
the 90 meters high waterfall of campanario. The wind will blow the water towards you, you will turn
on your own axis, maybe once, maybe often. Enjoy the view and the spray of water.
If you wish, you can leave the long ropes installed, walk up the stairs to the entry and redo
the descent. The only thing extra you will need, is a rope of 30 meters for the the entry abseil and the
small waterfall.
After your adventure, don't forget to enjoy some time at the Calhau da Lapa beachfront or even
have a bath in the warm atlantic.
